Earth Hour: Lights off, nobody home

Last Updated: March 25, 2010 2:00am

This Saturday (march 26th), many Canadians will briefly shun electricity.
They’ll sit in the dark for an hour during the fourth annual Earth Hour, the WWF-inspired global “lights out” campaign, symbolically protesting man-made climate change.
Let’s hope those participating, starting at 8:30 p.m., think about this issue seriously, not superficially.
For example, it’s become trendy during Earth Hour to light candles indoors to celebrate the brief absence of electricity.
Problem is, this creates far more indoor air pollution than keeping the lights on.
And if you’re planning a bonfire to show your green credentials, sorry.
Burning wood emits greenhouse gases and air pollution.
In the First World, we’re lucky. We can choose fire over electricity for an hour to show (ineffectively) how “green” we are.
By contrast, 1.5 billion people in the Third World don’t have that luxury.
They don’t have electricity. They’re stuck with fire, fuelled by wood and animal dung, to heat, light and cook in their homes.
As a direct result millions die, every year, decades before their time, choking on indoor air pollution.
Only in the affluent West do we naively romanticize a world without electricity as one of shepherds tending their flocks. Those without electricity know better.
Without electricity, life is nasty, brutal and short. People must stop work when the sun goes down. They can’t preserve food or create sterile medical environments, or any of the other benefits of civilization which prolong life.
Ironically, they are particularly vulnerable to climate change.
A coal-fired electricity plant, however much denounced by First World greens, saves lives in the Third World compared to the alternative, even factoring in smog and pollution, which is why China builds one a week.
How will we face our grandchildren and tell them we did nothing to stop catastrophic death counts caused by climate change, demands today’s smug warmist.
Better ask him how he will face his grandchildren and tell them he campaigned for consigning hundreds of millions to catastrophe by denouncing the very forms of energy by which we powered ourselves out of the Third World, into the First.
No easy answers
In the real world, responsible choices are complicated and hard.
No easy answers can be found in computer models, vainly trying to predict the climate a century from now.
Contrary to what warmists believe, the choice is not a simple one between saving or destroying our planet by burning fossil fuels.
Rather, we must choose wisely in the face of multiple threats confronting humanity.
Understanding begins with realizing there’s no such thing as “good” or “bad” energy.
There’s just energy, each type with advantages and drawbacks.
Coal, oil and natural gas, in descending order, emit pollution and greenhouse gases but supply relatively cheap, reliable, life-giving, life-extending electricity.
Nuclear power emits neither, but costs more and produces radioactive waste.
Wind and solar power are “clean” but so unreliable and expensive at present that the more we prematurely force them on anyone, including ourselves, the more harm we do.
Why? Because this leads to unreliable electricity supply, skyrocketing prices, more poverty, more deaths and less green, since only societies which can feed their people, care about the Earth.
Finally, think, if you’re sitting in the dark, for an hour, about what it would be like to live that way, every hour, as 1.5 billion people do. Think hard.

Toronto stays bright for earth hour

Sat Mar 27 2010
People in 120 countries pledged to go without electricity for an hour to call attention to climate change.

When Earth Hour came to Toronto this year, many of the lights stayed on.

Most of the downtown skyline was still ablaze, many of the bank buildings and the Rogers Centre. The CN Tower extinguished its colourful lights display, but safety lighting remained on.

According to Toronto Hydro, fewer people participated this year — the utility recorded a 10 per cent power drop between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, compared with 15.1 per cent last year. Across Ontario, 560 megawatts less energy was used. That’s enough to power the city of Brampton.

A city under siege
Toronto held hostage by threats from gangbangers
So this is what we’ve become: A city under siege, a city held hostage by gangbangers.
How else to describe the shocking events of these past few days, the stunning mistrial in the Jordan Manners murder case after frightened prosecution witnesses suddenly recanted their stories on the stand, intimidating gang members appeared strutting around the courthouse and the police had to call in the ETF to defend a hall of justice from rumours of a Crips’ plan to smuggle in a gun.
Not surprisingly, the deadlocked jury couldn’t reach a verdict in Jordan’s killing. And now the two young men charged with shooting the 15-year-old student in the stairwell at C.W. Jefferys high school will likely apply for bail while the Crown decides whether to retry their doomed case.
So what message does this send out to all those who would take up guns?
To the relatives of other victims still anxiously awaiting justice, the message is alarmingly clear: “It’s okay to kill, it’s okay to have a gun,” says a dismayed Clemee Joseph, 39. “They think they’re untouchable now.”
And how they must be laughing.
“I’m so angry and I know how Jordan’s mother is feeling right now,” says Joseph, a nanny who brought her two boys here from St. Lucia five years ago to find a better future. “When and if they find my son’s killer, I don’t want a mistrial, I want a conviction.”
Last May, Joseph lost her 18-year-old son Jarvis St. Remy, yet another young black teen shot down in the prime of his life.
Her oldest child was a quiet Grade 12 Weston Tech high school student who wanted to be a computer engineer.
That Friday night, he was just standing at a bus stop on Dundas St. anxious to make his curfew after spending the evening watching TV with his two best friends.
He would never make it home.
His mother sits in her pretty Etobicoke apartment, a portrait of her handsome son on the coffee table before her. “I got married two years ago and both my sons walked me down the aisle,” she explains with a smile that is both proud and sad.
Now her younger child struggles with life without his big brother, while she comes home from work every day still half expecting to find Jarvis sitting as usual at the computer by the front door.
Her pain slices deeper than any parent wishes to imagine.
What makes it even more unbearable is knowing his brazen killers remain out there with impunity. “Somebody knows something,” Joseph insists.
But fear reigns, intimidation rules.
She remembers that day three years ago when she heard a boy had been shot at C.W. Jefferys. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, that poor mother, what she must be feeling.’ Never would I have imagined that I would be in the same situation two years later.”
Now she aches along with Jordan’s mother to see our justice system kidnapped by the same kind of thugs who killed their children. She believes fear emboldens these gangsters and the fact that two witnesses in the Manners’ case were successfully silenced will only encourage them even more.
“Probably somebody threatened them,” Joseph believes. “More money has to be put into protection. People out there know what’s going on but they are afraid to talk because there’s no protection for them.”
The judge has asked that the two Manners’ witnesses be investigated. Yet surprisingly, even as the mother of a murdered child, Joseph sympathizes with the young women whose fear of reprisal may have scuttled the trial. “I don’t blame them. There’s nothing in place to protect them. If I’m afraid for my life, I would change my story, too.”
Just 10 days after her son was killed, 14-year-old Adrian Johnston was gunned down four blocks away in a field near Scarlett Rd.
His murder also remains unsolved, his relatives are just as certain that someone knows who pulled the trigger.
“Adrian’s friends won’t come forward because they’re afraid for their lives,” explains Lana Tisi, Adrian’s aunt.
And that’s what these gun-toting criminals are counting on.
Tisi was encouraged to see a murder case actually go to trial, only to watch the it unravel as the gangbangers’ intimidation seems to have seeped in and poisoned the downtown courthouse.
“Those kids are getting the message that they can go out and do whatever they want because they’ll get away with it,” she says.
Tisi believes someone got to the Manners’ prosecution witnesses and the blame for that lies with the police.
“If they aren’t going to protect the witnesses, who’s going to speak out?” she asks. “Who’s going to put their lives in jeopardy?”
And with no one willing to take that risk, the gangsters who gunned down Jarvis and Adrian and Jordan and so many other teens can keep their fingers on the trigger, with this entire city in their crosshairs.

Have you gone green between the sheets?

Virtually every aspect of the average person’s life can have some environmental impact. With more environmental awareness, we’ve begun to recognize that our driving habits create emissions, we generate waste through day-to-day living in our homes, and we abuse energy sources by using inefficient appliances.
Most of us are trying to make small changes to reduce our environmental impact in these areas. But, there is one aspect of life that few have even considered as having environmental repercussions: sex.
The use of condoms, one of the most popular birth control methods in North America, is wasteful. Latex is not biodegradable, and after every sexual activity these items end up in landfills. Sex toys that are battery operated and non-biodegradable lotions and enhancement products have similar repercussions.
A new book is soon to be released in order to help people make greener choices between the sheets, but that doesn’t mean that it’s too soon to start exploring the eco-friendly alternatives that offer the same safety and enjoyment without the ecological toll.

Against a backdrop of political intrigue, York Region police are investigating allegations that more than $100,000 is unaccounted for at one of the country's most storied cricket clubs.
The 56-year-old Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City filed a complaint with police March 19 claiming the funds are mysteriously absent from the balance sheet along with about 150 cheque stubs.
The former head of the club, who stepped down last year and was elected president of Cricket Canada last weekend as rumours swirled about the financial scandal, is calling the allegations a failed act of political sabotage.
Police spokesperson Sgt. Laurie Perks said the allegations will be investigated by the force's criminal investigations office.

By Ann Coulter Rather Than About Ann coulter...

OH, CANADA!
by Ann Coulter
March 24, 2010

Since arriving in Canada I've been accused of thought crimes, threatened with criminal prosecution for speeches I hadn't yet given, and denounced on the floor of the Parliament (which was nice because that one was on my "bucket list").

Posters advertising my speech have been officially banned, while posters denouncing me are plastered all over the University of Ottawa campus. Elected officials have been prohibited from attending my speeches. Also, the local clothing stores are fresh out of brown shirts.

Welcome to Canada!

The provost of the University of Ottawa, average student IQ: 0, wrote to me -- widely disseminating his letter to at least a half-dozen intermediaries before it reached me -- in advance of my visit in order to recommend that I familiarize myself with Canada's criminal laws regarding hate speech.

This marks the first time I've ever gotten hate mail for something I might do in the future.

Apparently Canadian law forbids "promoting hatred against any identifiable group," which the provost, Francois A. Houle advised me, "would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges."

I was given no specific examples of what words and phrases I couldn't use, but I take it I'm not supposed to say, "F--- you, Francois."

While it was a relief to know that it is still permissible in Canada to promote hatred against unidentifiable groups, upon reading Francois' letter, I suddenly realized that I had just been the victim of a hate crime! And it was committed by Francois A. Houle (French for "Frank A. Hole").

What other speakers get a warning not to promote hatred? Did Francois A. Houle send a similarly worded letter to Israel-hater Omar Barghouti before he spoke last year at U of Ottawa? ("Ottawa": Indian for "Land of the Bed-Wetters.")

How about Angela Davis, Communist Party member and former Black Panther who spoke at the University of Zero just last month?

Or do only conservatives get letters admonishing them to be civil? Or -- my suspicion -- is it only conservative women who fuel Francois' rage?

How about sending a letter to all Muslim speakers advising them to please bathe once a week while in Canada? Would that constitute a hate crime?

I'm sure Canada's Human Rights Commission will get to the bottom of Francois' strange warning to me, inasmuch as I will be filing a complaint with that august body, so I expect they will be reviewing every letter the university has sent to other speakers prior to their speeches to see if any of them were threatened with criminal prosecution.

Both writer Mark Steyn and editor Ezra Levant have been investigated by the Human Rights Commission for promoting hatred toward Muslims.

Levant's alleged crime was to reprint the cartoons of Mohammed originally published in a Danish newspaper, leading practitioners of the Religion of Peace to engage in murderous violence across the globe. Steyn's alleged crime was to publish an excerpt of his book, "America Alone" in Maclean's magazine, in which he jauntily described Muslims as "hot for jihad."

Both of them also flew jet airliners full of passengers into skyscrapers in lower Manhattan, resulting in thousands of deaths. No, wait -- that was somebody else.

Curiously, however, there was no evidence that either the cartoons or the column did, in fact, incite hatred toward Muslims -- nor was there the remotest possibility that they would.

By contrast, conservative speakers are regularly subjected to violent attacks on college campuses. Bill Kristol, Pat Buchanan, David Horowitz and I have all been the targets of infamous campus attacks.

That's why the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute (a sponsor of my Canada speeches) and the Young America's Foundation (a sponsor of many of my college speeches) don't send conservatives to college campuses without a bodyguard.

You'd have to be a real A-Houle not to anticipate that accusing a conservative of "promoting hatred" prior to her arrival on a college campus would in actuality -- not in liberal fantasies of terrified Muslims cowering in terror of Mark Steyn readers -- incite real-world violence toward the conservative.

The university itself acknowledged that Francois' letter was likely to provoke violence against me by demanding -- long after my speech was scheduled, but immediately after Francois disseminated his letter -- that my sponsors pony up more than $1,200 for extra security.

Also following Francois' letter, the Ottawa University Student Federation met for 7 1/2 hours to hammer out a series of resolutions denouncing me. The resolutions included:

"Whereas Ann Coulter is a hateful woman;

"Whereas she has made hateful comments against GLBTQ, Muslims, Jews and women;

"Whereas she violates an unwritten code of 'positive-space';

"Be it resolved that the SFUO express its disapproval of having Ann Coulter speak at the University of Ottawa."

At least the students didn't waste 7 1/2 hours on something silly, like their studies.

At the risk of violating anyone's positive space, what happened to Canada? How did the country that gave us Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd and Catherine O'Hara suddenly become a bunch of whining crybabies?

Want to hear my favorite Canadian joke? OK, here goes: Francois Houle! I never get tired of that one.

After Tuesday night, the hatred incited by Francois' letter is no longer theoretical. The police called off my speech when the auditorium was surrounded by thousands of rioting liberals -- screaming, blocking the entrance, throwing tables, demanding that my books be burned, and finally setting off the fire alarm.

Sadly, I missed the book burning because I never made it to the building.

But, reportedly, a Canadian crowd hasn't been this excited since they opened a new Tim Hortons. Local reporters couldn't make out what the crowd was chanting, but it was something about "Molson" and a "sled dog."

I've given more than 100 college speeches, and not once has one of my speeches been shut down at any point. Even the pie-throwing incident at the University of Arizona didn't break up the event. I said "Get them!", the college Republicans got them, and then I continued with my rambling, hate-filled diatribe -- I mean, my speech.

So we've run this experiment more than 100 times.

Only one college speech was ever met with so much mob violence that the police were forced to cancel it: The one that was preceded by a letter from the university provost accusing me of hate speech.

(To add insult to injury, Francois didn't even plan to attend my speech because Tuesday is his bikini wax night.)

If a university official's letter accusing a speaker of having a proclivity to commit speech crimes before she's given the speech -- which then leads to Facebook postings demanding that Ann Coulter be hurt, a massive riot and a police-ordered cancellation of the speech -- is not hate speech, then there is no such thing as hate speech.

Either Francois goes to jail or the Human Rights Commission is a hoax and a fraud.

Toronto councilor Rob Ford made the long-expected announcement Thursday morning that he is running for mayor.
"I'm a man of my word, Johnny," Ford told radio host John Oakley on AM640. "Today I'd like to officially say that I'm running for mayor of Toronto."
After making the announcement, Ford went to City Hall to file his papers, his new website, http://robfordformayor.ca, said.
He will not be making any more of his regular appearances on the radio program during the campaign, he also announced.
Ford (Ward 2- Etobicoke North) is considered the most conservative and divisive member on city council.
During his radio appearance Thursday, he said he wants to reduce the number of city councillors from 44 to 22, which should only add to his popularity among his peers.
Other candidates for mayor include deputy premier George Smitherman, former Liberal backroom strategist Rocco Rossi, Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone, Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti (Ward 7 York West) and Women's Post publisher Sarah Thomson.
The municipal election takes place on Oct. 25, 2010.

* You won't get the support of the special interest groups who have made a cottage industry out of racism, homelessness, poverty, alternative life styles, etc.  and milk the city dry but they do get the the vote out.
* You have to have a large war chest.
* You aren't going to get a lot of support from city unions.
* The leftists councilors, who will be trying to keep their place at the trough, will I believe work behind the scenes to knock you at every opportunity.

What does it mean to the Amish?
The Amish, though, discourage owning any insurance in favor of taking care of themselves and each other.

A clause in the bill likely would allow most Amish families an exemption from the insurance requirement, but the bill could still create sticky issues for the young people who have not formally joined the church.

Of even more concern for many is the affect the bill could have on Amish-owned businesses.

“It’s a huge concern for all Amish,” Yoder said. “It’s definitely not something we could comply with.”

The Earth Times has a report on a Harris poll that indicates a large number of Americans believe President Obama is a socialist Muslim carrying out Hitler's orders on behalf of Wall Street.
And those are the moderates. The hardliners think he might be the anti-Christ.
I hope the Pentagon keeps that nuclear button well guarded.
NEW YORK - (Business Wire) A new book, Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America by John Avlon describes the large numbers of Americans who hold extreme views of President Obama. This Harris Poll seeks to measure how many people are involved. It finds that 40% of adults believe he is a socialist. More than 30% think he wants to take away Americans’ right to own guns and that he is a Muslim. More than 25% believe he wants to turn over the sovereignty of the United States to a world government, has done many things that are unconstitutional, that he resents America’s heritage, and that he does what Wall Street tells him to do.
More than 20% believe he was not born in the United States, that he is “the domestic enemy the U.S. Constitution speaks of,” that he is racist and anti-American, and that he “wants to use an economic collapse or terrorist attack as an excuse to take dictatorial powers.” Fully 20% think he is “doing many of the things that Hitler did,” while 14% believe “he may be the anti-Christ” and 13% think “he wants the terrorists to win.”

Letters: At Ann Coulter event, 'lots of hate speech -- from students'

Ann Coulter continues to hold the attention of Canada. Here is some reaction from readers after her Ottawa speech was cancelled due to security concerns.
Re: Coulter Talk Cancelled For Security Reasons; Just Who's Guilty Of A Hate Crime, letters, both March 24. On Tuesday night I was one of several hundred people who waited patiently in the Ottawa rain to hear what Ann Coulter had to say, but alas it was not to be. It was an interesting experience being called a racist bigot and other slurs by a cadre of unruly and rude students, whose education is subsidized by my tax dollars. Then in yesterday's National Post, letter-writer Denise Cooke Browne asks the great unwashed not to "show up at [Ms. Coulter's] talks." Contempt prior to investigation: Doesn't that constitute bias? Ms. Cooke Browne also boasts of having been a former journalist and human rights investigator. It was fortunate I did not have to appear before her; I wouldn't have stood a chance. Geraldine Hyland, Orleans, Ont. While watching television coverage of Ann Coulter's aborted speech at the University of Ottawa on Tuesday, I saw no free speech but plenty of hate speech and threats of violence --from the students. Kevin Libin: 'Liberals know I haven’t said anything hateful,' Ann Coulter explains

One incontrovertible lesson to come from Ann Coulter's aborted speech in Ottawa Tuesday night, and indeed from the national reaction to her Canadian speaking tour this week, is that the U.S. pundit didn't even have to open her mouth to ignite a controversy about freedom of speech in Canada. Warned by campus authorities to censor herself or face the full brunt of Canada’s speech laws before she even arrived; subjected to fairly intense on-campus protests with students calling her hateful and demanding she not be allowed to speak; the talk was cancelled, citing security concerns. Ann Coulter had come to talk about political correctness and freedom of speech; about the double standard applied between conservatives and liberals. She made a most powerful statement without even showing up.

Free speech advocates say university administrators should be embarrassed that protesters forced right-wing firebrand Ann Coulter to cancel her appearance at the University of Ottawa, an event they claim is an attack on Canadian freedoms.
