If you ever want to make a militantly pro-choice feminist cough nervously and stare at her shoes, bring up the subject of sex-selective abortion. All over the world -- but especially in China, Korea and India -- modern ultrasound and home-testing technology is being used by boy-crazy parents to weed out (to use a metaphor roughly in keeping with the value that dogmatic pro-choicers place on unborn fetuses) tens of millions of female babies every year ... for no other reason than that they are female. And it's happening here in Canada, too. To quote from a 2006 National Post story: "Extrapolation from Statistics Canada census data reveals that in several areas highly populated by immigrants from India and China, the gender ratios are often out of proportion. Boys and girls aren't supposed to be born with equal frequency, of course. Mother Nature accounts for the higher male mortality rate by producing, under normal circumstances, 105 boys for every 100 girls. But in Surrey [B.C.], where the total population of nearly 350,000 includes 114,725 immigrants --35,380 of whom are from India -- the number is dramatically different.
