Paul Russell: Sex and Mideast peace on readers' minds

Sex was the main topic of conversation on the Letters page last week. That’s not to say that our readers suddenly turned into licentious hedonists; most instead contented themselves with offering opinions on how and when young people should be taught about this basic human function. The hastily aborted proposal by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to revise the sex ed curriculum — so that Grade 3 students would be told about sexual orientation and Grade 6 students assured that auto-eroticism is natural — started this debate. Our readers and columnists weighed in with their own advice. In his column last Tuesday, “Hide your kids. The liberals are coming,” John Moore championed the proposed changes. He noted that the “tweaking” of the sex ed program was defeated by “religious conservatives ... who are fooling themselves if they think their kids aren’t Twittering and Googling words like ‘anal,’ ‘oral’ and ‘masturbation.’ ” Not surprisingly, his column brought in many passionate responses.
