Last week, former Ontario premier Mike Harris received an honorary doctorate from Nipissing University. Nipissing pushed ahead with its decision to honour Harris despite warnings by the major Ontario teachers’ unions that they might retaliate by denying practicum job placements to Nipissing student teachers.
Nippising graduates roughly 800 students a year, students who must complete in-class work at Nipissing, as well as three practicum placements in order to graduate. The practicum placements see the student teachers placed in a classroom setting under the supervision of a teacher, experiencing everything they can expect to in a full-time career.
