Presumably one of the first acts of retribution policy initiatives the new Harper majority will take is the removal of the $2-per-vote subsidy for federal political parties. The Prime Minister made no secret of his plan to do so, and he now has the ability to carry it out with limited fuss.
It would be smart to make it one of the government’s first actions, along with other long-standing ambitions (see: Gun registry; abolition of) so they will be out of the way, and long forgotten come the next election. But while the Tory faithful will be happy to see the subsidies go, the election results have changed political realities so much that the need to act (as opposed to the desire to act) seems somewhat less pressing than it used to.
