Chong: Politics of transit in Toronto
When it comes to public transit, Premier Kathleen Wynne, former premier Dalton McGuinty, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and TTC Chair Karen Stintz have all been pilloried for their transgressions and flip flops.
But another problem, perpetrated on an unsuspecting public by former Toronto mayor David Miller, has not been adequately illuminated.
It set the stage for Ford’s election and explains in part his obsession with building “subways.” While it’s great fun to scorn Ford’s battle cry of “Subways! Subways! Subways!” as simplistic, his audiences (in Scarborough and across Toronto) know he means public transit should not take up existing road space.
