Paul Russell: Let's Bash Toronto
Toronto is a favourite target of letters writers. In tomorrow's paper, Hogtown is targeted by two readers living on its outskirts, as they respond to our Tuesday editorial opposing plans to hike taxes in the city.
"I find it hard to shed a tear for the poor Toronto taxpayer who will be forced to fork out more dough for alcoholic beverages or their already exorbitantly priced homes. After all, they elected Mayor David Miller and his socialist cronies. Maybe, next time, the electorate will be a little wiser when it comes to their votes and elect people who are fiscally responsible.
Enjoy your new taxes, Toronto — you earned them."
Aaron Martyn, Brantford, Ont.
There was also this note
"I don’t live in Toronto, but I do not recall Mayor David Miller campaigning on raising taxes so dramatically. He and his council should do the honourable thing — resign and hold a new election with these proposed tax hikes clearly on the table. If the current slate of leaders is re-elected, they will then have earned the moral authority to tax everything that moves."
Angelo Zenga, Mississauga, Ont.
