Recycling jammed down our throats |
It was comforting to discover that after two weeks away in Israel, the myopic Millerites were dishing out their usual malarkey yesterday.
I joke, of course, about finding that notion comforting. But the moment Mayor David Miller and his minions started promoting their new garbage "rate" (it's not a tax!) as a "financial incentive" to do the right thing -- that is to get the city's waste diversion rate to a lofty 70% by 2010 -- I knew they were full of their usual self-righteous rubbish.
Predictably the poorly conceived plan, which starting next July will take the cost of garbage pickup off the property tax base and charge citizens according to the number of garbage bags they generate (over and above their green bin and recycling efforts), passed 28-16 after much holier-than-thou sermonizing from Miller and his well-trained lapdogs.
