Disable Parking! Another Issue That Only Get's Lip Service

The Star article will do little to correct the problem but it does give politcos a chance to mouth off.....Canfield & Mihevic

But the Star found permit holders who either did not meet the criteria, were issued permits under a loose interpretation of the rules, or were using someone else's permit.

"Shameful, isn't it?" says Cansfield, when told what the Star found. "We need to revisit and revise this program because it obviously has some holes in it."

The transportation ministry does little to ensure that only those who need permits get them, relying instead on a long list of health professionals, including doctors, nurse practitioners, chiropractors and occupational therapists to properly authorize permit requests.

"The current system is not in need of reform – it's in need of radical overhaul and rethinking," says city councillor Joe Mihevc, former chair of the city's Disabilities Issues Committee. "It's too easy to get them. The doctors will give you that note. You give that note to the ministry of transportation. You get that sticker and it's a free-parking pass."

They should get off their butts and do something. The could start off by making it illegal to use the permit unless the person to whom the permit was issued is actually being transported in the vehicle. What did Mihevic do about the problem when he chaired the city's Disabilities Issues Committee?
