An Insight Into Homelessness

A sad but instructive story

Homelessness is not always what the homeless advocates say it is. While the homeless advocates characterize homelessness as a societal failing, it is in many ways a sign of an individual’s freedom to follow his/her own path. The homeless advocates are often more interested in bashing our society (guilt) and capitalism in particular than they are in explaining that there are many different causes for homelessness. Do you think the man portrayed in this piece is homeless because there is no place available for him to live? Or, that no one in his family or the neighborhood will not help him? If this man were given an apartment of his own how long do you think he would stay there and/or make the place unlivable.

Back in the 1970’s, the ACLU successfully fought to release those mentally ill folks who were not a public threat from psychiatric institutions. They did it on the basis that these people were not criminals. Those who might remember NYC Mayor Koch personally trying to get a homeless woman off the streets will also remember that he was not successful. The woman soon returned to her spot in front of the same store she was found in the first place.

Most homeless advocates, have a political agenda. That agenda has little to do with solving homelessness. If you tried to lock up the homeless for alcoholism, drug addiction or mental illness they would be among the first to complain. If you gave them housing and an allowance (which San Francisco does) and they were back out on the street more strung out on drugs or booze than before, they would still blame the evil capitalist citizens of not caring enough. Unfortunately some things are not curable, as the man in this piece shows. Just consider it another for of multiculturalism.
