Muslims challenge school yoga drill

WHAT is believed to be the world’s largest single yoga drill took place in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh yesterday despite last-minute intervention by the High Court, acting on complaints that it would offend Islam.
Amid fierce resistance from furious Islamic organisations, the court ruled that the mass yoga class, involving an estimated five million schoolchildren, could go ahead, but on a voluntary basis, with Muslims not compelled to take part.The timeless six-posture Surya Namaskar (Salute to the Sun) yoga drill was ordered by the state’s Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, as part of a drive aimed at improving the health of the state’s children.
