An Example Of A Community Helping It's Community

Rather than running to City Hall and Queen's Park with their hand out. And let's not forget other examples like the United Way, Villa Colombo, etc.

Gala held to aid seniors
By JACK BOLAND, TORONTO SUN

The charity auction gala was conjured up in Wong's basement with his close friend Frank Hsu, owner of Young Lok restaurants. Since its inception in 1990, the annual event has raised $24 million towards helping seniors of Asian backgrounds at the Yee Hong Centres.

"They feel comfortable and respected. Their dignity is being respected," said Wong. "It is very important for us to deliver excellent services to our seniors.

A preview yesterday held at the Metropolitan Hotel in downtown Toronto brought out one of the gala's entertainers, Michael Burgess, of Les Miserables fame.

The 18th annual gala will be held at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre on Feb. 17, the day before the official Chinese New Year.

William Lau, of HSBC Bank Canada, said he and his company are proud to be the title sponsors of this year's gala.

Lau said he enjoys devoting time to the event because it is such a good cause.

Since 1994, the Yee Hong Centres have provided care to seniors who may deal with social isolation, and need palliative care and rehabilitative and physiotherapy treatments.
