....but that aside could this be the future solution? Neighborhoods opting out! They did in Etobicoke and also in York until Comrade Miller sucked up to his union buddies.
Do-it-yourself garbage is the latest thing By DON PEAT, SUN MEDIA
While Toronto residents lined up at newly opened temporary trash dumps around the city, it was garbage day in a Scarborough neighbourhood.George Pappas of the Scarborough-Agincourt Residents Association had a dumpster brought in yesterday so residents could dump their trash.
Pappas handed out flyers to around 1,200 local residents around Timberbank Blvd. and Chaldean St. ahead of dumpster day, inviting them to bring their trash to the site anytime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. After that the bin was hauled away to avoid odour and rats.
"I'm asking councillors to do the same thing our ward association has done," Pappas said. "Get out your budget, you have a $53,000 office budget, rent a bin for the community."
As soon as the dumpster arrived, just before 10 a.m., residents were popping out of their houses to toss their trash.
"You got to get rid of your stinky garbage," Lei Chu said after dropping her trash in the bin.
Alan Chow had tried to throw his trash out at a transfer station earlier yesterday but didn't want to wait.
"I wanted to drop my garbage off at the transfer station but the wait is way too long, two blocks that's the lineup," Chow said.
It wasn't the only neighbourhood trashing their garbage other than at city dump sites.
Homeowners along Sutherland Dr. filled one of Waste Management's Rhinobags yesterday and then watched as a boom truck hauled it away.
The company is promoting the bag as an alternative for waste disposal for groups of neighbours.
