Matt Gurney: Police should enforce the law, not assist the disgruntled

Only a few days into Toronto's city workers' strike, the tension is already high. Frustrated Torontonians have been held at picket lines and refused entry to city-owned facilities, in blatant violation of the long-standing right for citizens to move freely within their country, even if it annoys a union. Not only does this fly in the face of our fundamental freedoms, but also against Toronto's own policies, which clearly state: “...it is unlawful for picketers to prevent you from crossing a picket line...” It is therefore not an exaggeration to state that pickets refusing to permit citizens to cross the lines are literally breaking the law.

The City's response? They say they're reviewing policies. Couldn't this have been done at some point in the past six months, when the unionized workers were working without a contract and everyone knew a strike was possible? Apparently not, though Mayor David Miller wasted no time threatening those Torontonians who left their garbage outside facilities they were illegally prevented from entering. Meanwhile, the lawbreaking picketers, of course, remain unchallenged.
