I think it's wonderful that the businesses, banks, restaurants and citizens of downtown Toronto are taking such a huge interest in celebrating PRIDE this year, with all the flags and colourful decorations. However, I'm disappointed that I don't see the same enthusiasm for Canada Day on July 1.
Where is the maple leaf flag and red and white decorations in store windows, cars and balconies? Where are the commercials on "What It Means To Be Canadian" or editorials and columns on Canada or famous Canadians?
We are so lucky to live in this country, where we are free to worship as we please, vote as we like (or not vote for that matter), speak out against what we believe is wrong and support what we feel is right, the right to strike, and yes, even have same-sex couples marry and hold hands in public.
Thousands come to Canada each year for one or more of these reasons and want to make Canada their home. Without these rights and freedoms there wouldn't be a PRIDE. It's time to celebrate our nationhood and on this 142nd anniversary of Confederation.
