The Quixotic NDP To Prop Up The Government

Who would have guessed, even as recently as the beginning of this week, that it would be the Bloc Quebecois that showed the most sense among opposition parties and agreed to vote with the Conservatives to avoid a fall vote? After all, among the three, the Bloc has the least to lose from a federal election.
The Bloc knows the federalist vote in Quebec is badly split between the Tories and the Liberals. This plays to its advantage. If an election were held now, Bloc candidates could win most Quebec ridings with just 40% or less of the vote. By delaying an election, the Bloc is running the risk of one of the federalist parties gaining traction over the other and posing a greater threat to the Bloc's electoral fortunes.
Nevertheless, Tuesday, Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe announced his caucus would support the Conservatives in a ways-and-means motion expected tomorrow that would, among other things, authorize the money needed for the hugely popular federal renovation tax credit.
