
It’s the time of year --- Thanksgiving --- that the food banks call for our help.
And help them we should.
Yet the fact food banks exist --- and are needed --- is a terrible indictment of our society.
In effect food banks, and the booming trade they generate, say that there is hunger in one of the richest nations on earth.
We have freedom in Canada. But we do not have real freedom from hunger. If we did, there would be no need for food banks.
I don’t argue against food banks. They do wonderful work. I argue against the fact we need them; that without them, there would be starvation in Canada; that there are Canadians, many with jobs, who do not have money to feed their families.
The food banks and their workers and volunteers deserve our praise and support. Nevertheless they mask an unpleasant truth the ...
