Gay leaders blame TV ads, Obama for same-sex marriage loss in Maine; conservatives rejoice

SAN FRANCISCO - Stunned and angry, national gay rights leaders Wednesday blamed scare-mongering ads - and President Barack Obama's lack of engagement - for a bitter election setback in Maine that could alter the dynamics for both sides in the gay-marriage debate.

Electors flocked to the polls, surprising state officials who were expecting a low turnout — organizers had to send emergency supplies of photocopied ballots to satisfy demand. Residents approved tax increases and loosening the rules governing medical use of marijuana: Maine is one of only 13 states that allow the drug to be used in this way, along with California.
But in another parallel with California — and probably the reason for the high turnout — they drew the line at gay marriage, voting to reject the same-sex marriage law passed by lawmakers.
