Kelly McParland: The immigration threat to Original Six Canadians

The big news from Statistics Canada is that Canada has a lot of immigrants. And it's going to get a whole lot more. By 2031 the exact percentage of visible minority Canadians will go from Huge to Humungus. That's a technical term.

That's the headline news, but it's not really accurate. While it's true that this influx of immigrants (I'm trying to get through this entire piece without using the word "flood") will take place in Canada, in reality it will be confined to a couple of large cities. Geographically, 99% of Canada -- the part that isn't Toronto, Vancouver or, to a lesser extent, Montreal -- won't have a huge immigrant population. Toronto and Vancouver, on the other hand, will be overwhelmed. According to the figures, 71% of all visible minorities will live in one of the country's three largest cities. In Toronto they'll make up 63% of the population, in Vancouver 59%.
