John Ivison: Ignatieff’s unfunded promises adding up fast

If Michael Ignatieff ever becomes Prime Minister, he should gather up all the old speeches he made in Opposition and burn them. He should probably start with the one he will make tomorrow, which will detail a national home-care strategy.

Mr. Ignatieff is keen to portray the Liberals as the party that will invest in the real priorities of Canadians like homecare, in contrast to the Conservatives, who are giving $6-billion in tax breaks to big corporations.

“The woman I met in Montreal this summer looks out at a world in which her government is spending $1.3 billion on a G8-G20 summit, $16 billion on planes without a competitive bid, triples the publicity budget of the government and is about to give big corporations a $6-billion tax break. The question she wants answered by the government is: ‘What about my priorities? When am I going to matter?’,” he said in Question Period.
