Robert Fulford: Teachers’ unions just can’t handle the merit principle

The people who run teachers’ unions in North America fall into a faint when anyone proposes paying teachers on the basis of ability. It’s so radical and outrageous a proposal, so foreign to union thinking, that they don’t even want it tried. They don’t want to be told that it’s already been applied in many places. They don’t want to hear about it again, ever. It terrifies them.
Yet many parents and many politicians believe it could improve education. In March, 2009, when Barack Obama outlined his hopes for education reform, he endorsed merit pay. “We know it can make a difference in the classroom,” he said. “It’s time to start rewarding good teachers.” Read More »

...and their major support comes from the marginal workers and protecting this group  and this has led to the unions controlling the education systems
