All fair-minded Canadians welcome the timely report of Justice Sidney Linden's investigation into the police killing of Dudley George, an unarmed native activist. This report has prompted Premier Dalton McGuinty to apologize to George's family on behalf of the Ontario government. Former premier Mike Harris, under whose watch the shooting occurred, still seems more interested in whitewashing his contribution to this tragedy.

Since the release of Linden's report, the media have been rightly critical of Ottawa's failure to resolve long-standing land claims. But success in settling land claims will ultimately depend on challenging the legacy of colonial attitudes that poison public opinion. Similar to systemic racism, such attitudes uphold a false superiority based on the premise that we "know what is best" for native people.

Fortunately, change has begun. For example, some high schools, colleges and universities are changing their curriculum to reflect the actual experience of First Nations. Indigenous people are starting to reclaim their culture and their land.

Those of us who are non-native have a clear choice: We can open our minds and hearts to the wisdom of First Nations traditions. We can learn how to respect our differences, while building bridges across our common humanity.
