OTTAWA -- A new law means judges no longer have the option to allow house arrest for serious, violent crimes.

A Conservative bill to toughen up the rules on conditional sentencing received royal assent Thursday.

Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says it means no more criminals convicted of serious, violent crimes will be able to serve sentences in their homes.

Most such criminals already receive prison terms and it's not clear how many received house arrest since the option was made available in 1996.

The new law eliminates the option of conditional sentences for indictable offences punishable by 10 years or more involving serious violence, sexual assault, terrorism or criminal groups.
