Inquiries, Coalitions, Study Groups, Mentoring Programs, Etc. Etc.

Are just more cop outs and an attempt by everyone to shift the blame for street violence and imho an attempt by some social in-activists to get a piece of poverty funding pie. Give police stop and search authority, setup special courts for possession of restricted weapons which will hand out quick and harsh consecutive sentences regardless of age, setup "gulag" style camps in the harshest parts of the country, etc. Get the garbage off the streets and send out a message that there is no glory in being part of a gang. Recognize that the majority of the people in a community are raising their children to become productive honest citizens.

WHERE DID THE KIDS WHO SHOT JORDAN GET THE GUN AND HAS THE INDIVIDUAL WHO SUPPLIED THE GUN BEEN ARRESTED? I doubt whether those kids traveled to the US.........

Private Inquiry Called Off Into Jordan Manners' Death, After Gov't. Blinks

Monday June 11, 2007

In the game of public opinion chicken, it can be argued that Premier Dalton McGuinty blinked - and his movements mean there won't be any kind of informal inquiry held into the shooting of death of Jordan Manners after all. Community leaders and the family of the slain 15-year-old had publicly dared politicians to show up for their self-called unofficial probe into the teen's shooting death three weeks ago inside C.W. Jefferys C.I. Their contention - if the government won't look into the causes of youth violence, we will.

Both black groups and members of B'Nai Brith pledged their resolve to get answers, along with members of Jordan's still grieving family. But what happened Monday changed all that and now the inquiry is off. At least for the time being.

McGuinty has appointed retiring Chief Justice Roy McMurtry and former Legislature speaker Alvin Curling to probe the growing trend of youth violence in Ontario schools and seek real solutions to the deadly dilemma. "I'm not prepared to accept that somehow large urban centres here in Ontario must absolutely and necessarily fall victim to the plight of large urban centres in the United Kingdom or the United States," the Premier announced to a hastily called Monday afternoon news conference. "I'm convinced we can learn from experiences elsewhere."

He claims to have spoken with Jordan's mother and been touched by her determination to ensure her son didn't die in vain.

"I just want to find out what really happened, you know. I don't want to see like another family go through this," said Jordan's still-grieving mom, Loreen Smalls.

"It's sad to see it took my son's death to, you know, but this will change someone else's life."

The opposition agrees the move is long overdue and wonders why the McGuinty government didn't act sooner, arguing it should appoint a permanent Youth Commissioner to keep tabs on what's happening with young people in schools. "Where has this man been?" wonders Conservative Leader John Tory. "How many more people have to die on the streets, in broad daylight, in schools or anywhere else before we're going to see an action plan instead of being told to be patient?"

There's no word on how long the probe might take, but most agree it's long overdue.

"The people of Ontario have demonstrated their resolve to work towards long-term solutions to this pressing problem," responds family lawyer Courtney Betty. "We are encouraged by the appointment of these two distinguished individuals ... to do a review into gun violence."

Meanwhile Toronto's David Miller may soon belong to a club he didn't even realize he was eligible to be a member of - a group of U.S. mayors. The civic leaders have formed a coalition designed to crack down on illegal guns down south - and Miller's Buffalo counterpart, Byron Brown, has requested that T.O.'s main man be allowed to join in. Miller has long believed that the majority of illegal guns coming into Canada and Toronto are smuggled in from across the border. And he sees more U.S. authorities coming on side. "They believe the illegal guns come from some traceable dealers, and if you shut them down, you can start to cut off the flow. And I think that's the right attitude. Anything we do will make a big difference."
