The owner of one of Toronto's worst-maintained apartment buildings is the City of Toronto.
Since June 2005, city inspectors have made 45 demands for repairs at 1884 Davenport Rd., more work orders than they have issued to any other single building. Among problems, they've noted an insect infestation, damaged pipes and floors, leaking bathroom fixtures, and missing window screens.
The 186-unit building, near Lansdowne Ave., is one of about 360 public housing apartments run by the city-owned Toronto Community Housing Corporation. The TCHC says chronic provincial government underfunding is responsible for the decay of many of its buildings.
