It Is Encouraging That Indians & CN Have An Understanding

But CN also has an obligation to the rest of the citizens of Canada and when they don't meet those obligations you can bet there will be some ass kicking. It is a shame that it is taking private enterprise to enforce the laws of the land.

Canadian National Railway has filed a civil suit for damages against Mohawk protester Shawn Brant and others involved in the April 20 blockade near Belleville.

The protesters were attempting to bring public notice to the neighbouring quarry that was digging up Mohawk land. In addition, they were highlighting environmental issues related to the quarry.

Living on a First Nations reserve, I have heard many comments about CN's recent move. Many like me are determined never to step foot on a VIA Rail train again, even though CN and VIA are separate companies. It is a silent protest. First Nations people have lived with railway tracks dissecting their communities since reserves existed. I know people who have lost limbs and lives because of the trains passing through. But for the most part, it has been a peaceful coexistence.

CN had a policy of dealing with aboriginal communities: "A series of policy guidelines spell out the company's commitment to dealing fairly with the many aboriginal communities along its rail lines. CN actively encourages two-way communication, cross-cultural training, safety awareness, and conflict resolution between its employees and members of First Nations."

It would be interesting to see how this policy was employed before the decision was made to sue Shawn Brant, et. al. I wonder if it was even a consideration.
