Mayor Miller is being lauded for keeping increases to the rate of inflation which is well and good except for the fact the city is so fiscally challanged that the property tax should reflect more closely what it is costing to run the city. Of course this wouldn't get anyone elected so the other option is to reduce expenses by cutting programs, reducing staff, holding the line on wage increases, etc. which will never happen because this would lose the mayor his support from unions, social in-activists, the environnuts.
New budget team meets this week for the first time By SUE-ANN LEVY Council's new budget team meets for the first time tomorrow and I don't mind saying it is painfully thin on fiscal talent. In fact, I have this sinking feeling that the group -- stacked with Mayor David Miller's cronies and political neophytes -- will be operating on a wing and a prayer until the city's $8.1-billion operating budget is approved in mid-April. I hope I'm wrong but I suspect the only talk of efficiencies with this crew will be how efficiently they can divide up the spoils for their favourite pet projects.
Get the life jackets......
