Meddling with courts

Editorial, Jan. 12.

In your editorial you state; "The creation of a new position raises concern that it hopes to name judges inclined to be `tough on crime' rather than attentive to civil rights," presumably referring to the rights of criminals.

By what twisted logic is it assumed that predators who deprive law-abiding citizens of their civil rights to the safety of their persons and property should enjoy the same civil rights as the latter?

Surely on the scales of justice, the civil rights of society, to be protected by the courts, should morally and legally outweigh the rights of convicted criminals. Hence the need to name judges inclined to be "tough on crime" rather than focus on the civil rights of perpetrators.
