Outrageous spending by Toronto city councillors has generated plenty of embarrassing headlines, but they are not the only local leaders indulging in questionable use of public dollars. They are joined by municipal officials in Brampton and Mississauga who are spending almost $100,000 to attend award ceremonies in London, England.
To participate in the World Leadership Awards, these Peel Region cities have each spent a reported $20,000 on promotional videos and at least $6,500 on registration fees. Remaining costs involve sending a nine-member Brampton delegation to the event, including Mayor Susan Fennell, and a group from Mississauga including Mayor Hazel McCallion, a communications employee, the city manager's assistant and the director of parks. Neither of the cities won its award category when the prizes were issued last week.
