40% Of Electorate Already Find Voting Tiresome

Jonathan Kay on B.C.'s electoral-reform referendum: Say no to STV

One sign that a society is running out of real problems is that bored upper-middle-class types start inventing phony ones. Thus do we periodically get initiatives aimed at replacing our perfectly functional first-past-the-post electoral system with some hybrid alternative that few understand or support. In Ontario, this alternative — soundly rejected at the polls in 2007 — was called mixed-member proportional representation. In British Columbia, it's called the "Single Transferable Vote." On May 12, B.C. will hold a referendum (in conjunction with a general election) in which voters will be given the choice whether to stick with the old system for electing MLAs, or bring in STV. Let's hope they stick with the old system — and not just because the new acronym sounds like something you caught from your old college boyfriend.

Last word: In the final analysis this blog is a relief valve for my rants/raves.
