Kelly McParland: What Nortel executives have in common with pig-headed union bosses

Crises, it is said, bring out the best and worst in people. I don't know about the best, but there's plenty of evidence that the worst is popping up all over. Here are three examples, which have the added attraction if illustrating that pig-headedness and the blind determination to protect privileges is not limited by class, income or social standing.

* Mike Zafirovski, latest in a sad parade of CEOs to lead Nortel Networks as it careens from what was once a fine company into a corporate basket case, appeared before a Commons committee this week to explain why it was necessary to slash benefits to workers while heaping bonuses on management. Mr. Zafiroski, "wiping trickles of sweat from his forehead and complaining of the heat in a stuffy House of Commons committee room," according to one account insisted that it "was the most painful and agonizing in my 43 years of business," and "we really did not believe there was any other option."
