- AFL-CIO: Buy American or the Canadian terrorists win
-
The AFL-CIO is fighting back against U.S. interests that argue the Buy American campaign is self-defeating, and opens up the U.S. to retaliation. Recently the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wrote President Obama to point out that a country that depends on trade to the extent the U.S. does can hardly afford to start closing the door on trade partners.
"We are sending exactly the wrong signal to our trading partners and we are very concerned about the impact this will have across the U.S.," said Myron Brilliant, vice-president of international affairs for the U.S. chamber.
Oh piffle, says the AFL-CIO, which counters with a time-honoured trade union approach: paint opponents as unpatriotic. Turns out that critics of Buy American are in league with the enemy, the enemy in this case being foreign embassies.
