Will Pride Day Parade Turn Into Halloween Night Out The St, Charles?

Martin Gladstone: Pride parade gives ground to anti-Israel gong show

The gay pride parade, which takes place in Toronto on June 28, 2009, is now the largest tourist event in the city of Toronto. It attracts over one million people, and an audience of untold more thanks to the live broadcast of the parade.

After much controversy, the executive committee of gay pride has confirmed that it will allow political banners in the gay pride parade. They have also confirmed that they will allow “End Israel Apartheid” banners in the parade. In fact, all groups may carry “political” banners provided they do not run afoul of the hate laws of Canada and such signs are officially registered.

By allowing parties to march with “political” banners in a free for all, Pride has opened the floodgates to every disgruntled minority and fringe group to message under the guise of free speech, with divisive and borderline hateful messages. Whether such messages are related or unrelated to its mandate is not a concern. People can march and bash whatever. For Pride, it’s all officially a big party about free speech, everybody welcome.

In reality, however, Pride has abdicated its responsibility over the content and character of its parade. It has created what can only grow into a punch and counter punch political arena destined to deteriorate into a gong show style circus, a made-in-Canada Durban II.
