Today's Major Issues

Everything old is new again

The return of Suuad Hagi Mohamud, of colonialism in the Canadian Arctic and — maybe — coalition madness.

The NDP convention that struck so many observers as a complete letdown made perfect sense to the Toronto Star's Chantal Hébert. Why, she asks, would they take a branding risk like changing the party name so soon (theoretically, anyway) before an election? After all, Jack Layton is clearly willing “to go the extra mile to get the NDP in the loop of power,” and their current level of support was enough to get them a sniff at government during the coalition madness. Similarly, it wouldn't have made much sense for the NDP to adopt a bunch of strident new policies when in short order they could once again be in a position to join forces with the Liberals and have to jettison them all over again.

In the matter of Suaad Hagi Mohamud, the Canadian woman stranded in Kenya for three weeks under ludicrous circumstances, The Globe and Mail's Christie Blatchford will not tolerate “another quiet little review,” such as we got with William Sampson. She wants those responsible — “from consular officials to [Public Safety Minister Peter] Van Loan and Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon — called on the carpet to explain themselves.” Needless to say, we agree. We also think people should be allowed to throw water balloons at those responsible if their explanations are evasive, insufficient or self-incriminating. (Just an aside: Far be it from us to teach Christie Blatchford how to suck eggs, but the words “I don't know much about [insert topic here]” constitute a really terrible lede.)
