Peepoo bag: a toilet for 2.6 billion people?
Organic waste generated from humans and animals can have environmental benefits. It works as fertilizer, and can be converted to an eco-friendly biofuel source. In some developing countries, however, the effect is opposite. Without access to adequate toilet facilities, water contamination is a major issue. Now a new innovation offers a solution that’s beneficial all around. The Peepoo bags are made of biodegradable plastic and lined with a special substance that’s designed to disinfect waste and prevent odor. Individuals who do not have access to a latrine, can use these one use bags to dispose of their body-generated waste.
Peepoo bags, if put into regular use, could address water contamination issues in developing countries, increasing the availability of the natural resource. Then, after three or four weeks of burial, the bags convert the waste to a high-quality fertilizer which is another resource that could improve industry and quality of life in many nations.
Currently, the Peepoo bag is undergoing field tests in India and Kenya and the creators are hopeful that they’ll be produced and distributed by summer 2010.
