Matt Gurney: The BBC shines on Rwanda’s police state

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame greets supporters at the launch of his re-election campaign on July 20 at a rally in the capital Kigali. Kagame said he was confident of re-election on August 9 as he kicked off a campaign already tarnished by a string of political assassinations and arrests. 

The BBC reports that a new study by Transparency International, which monitors corruption in countries across the globe, has determined that Rwanda has “negligible” levels of corruption. Well, okay, that’s good, then. God knows they could use a little good news. In fact, the BBC report touches on that directly, commenting, “Since the genocide, in which some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed, Rwanda’s government has acquired many admirers in the West for its efficiency.”
Not sure it was worth the price, but, you take what you can get, I suppose. And, indeed, the BBC report is not the first to mention this, Rwanda is well known for its efforts to rebuild itself as a modern, progressive country in the aftermath of the slaughter of 1994.
