The claim that crime is down 17% from a decade ago is being used by the every-boy-a-good-boy crowd to discredit the Harper government’s push for tougher sentencing and more prisons. Everything is fine with our lenient approach, they claim. If it weren’t working, would crime be falling so dramatically?
While it is right to be skeptical of spending $5-billion or more for the Tories’ get-tough approach — more prisons may be necessary, but it seems impossible to get value for money from $5-billion more — it is also right to be skeptical of the most recent crime stats. They reflect only those crimes reported to police, and, increasingly, victims are keeping to themselves the crimes they suffer. Read More »
