Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou: Amazing life — lousy poetry, prose
One reason why she was easy to parody (“The ebony fighter awakens, dabbled with the dewy beads of morn”, from “The Simpsons”) is because she spent four decades trembling on the brink of self-parody, and occasionally plunging in head-first. I loved all those old African proverbs, and I would like to think they were all cooked up by an enterprising intern working round the clock in her basement. How many old African proverbs are out there? Well, as the old African proverb on page 70 of Even The Stars Get Lonesome put it: “Sea never dry.”Come on: I’m a better poet than Maya Angelou.
Her resilience, voice and overall persona made her famous, not her writing ability.

Kathleen Wynne leaves door open to coalition government in Ontario election
Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne is leaving the door open to forming a coalition government in order to stay in power.
“I am not ruling out anything . . . I have demonstrated how I can work in a minority parliament,” Wynne told reporters Wednesday after visiting a full-day kindergarten class at St. Julia Billiart Catholic Elementary School in Markham.
“That’s how I would continue to work in a minority parliament if that is what the people of Ontario decide,” Wynne said referring to the June 12 provincial election.

Cis-Ridiculous. How many labels do we need?
It’s time to come out of the closet: I am a cisgender woman.
I can see that you have a quizzical look on your faces. I suppose you don’t know what cisgender means. It is one of the 27,956 genders one can choose for oneself on a Facebook profile. A cisgender person identifies as the gender he or she was assigned at birth. “If a doctor said, ‘It’s a boy!’ when you were born, and you identify as a man, then you could be described as cisgender,” says the website BasicRights.org.
Wait, you are saying to yourselves, then aren’t you just a straight person? What is the difference between straight and cisgender?
According to a Tumblr blog called What-Does-Cis-Mean:
"terms like cis allow us to identify when we mean cis men/women instead of always using men/women to mean cis men/women while always distinguishing trans men/women as the other. It places cis and trans people on equal ground."
I agree, that explanation was needlessly complicated. I will dumb it down for you. A cisgender is basically a non-transgender. But wait, you can’t say non-transgender. It is offensive for some reason. According to BasicRights, “referring to cisgender people as ‘non trans’ implies that cisgender people are the default and that being trans is abnormal.”
This is the main reasoning behind the existence of the word “cisgender.”

BACK TO 1930S THANKS TO MICHELLE?
Is America Starting To Target Thought Crime?
Last week, Michelle Obama made headlines when she exhorted graduating high schoolers in a commencement address to monitor their families for politically incorrect thoughts and behaviors.
To one journalist, this was more than an off-hand comment made by the first lady. In the opinion of Cheryl Chumley, a reporter for The Washington Times and the author of “Police State USA,” Michelle Obama’s remark reflects a growing trend in America to target and attack individuals for committing “thought crime.”
“Michelle Obama’s push for kids around the nation to monitor their family members for perceived racist comments is just another way the government seeks to inject itself into an area it doesn’t really belong — the American home,” Chumley told The Daily Caller Monday.
“Having the first lady wag her finger at us and send America’s youth on some sort of quest to scour the homes and backyards of our nation’s families for any mention of a racist joke, slur or slight is nanny-governance run amok — something that belongs in a George Orwell novel, not the White House,” Chumley said.

ANOTHER BLOGGING FIRST?
The First-Ever Bitcoin Purchase Was Remarkably Inglorious
The Wall Street Journal's Moneybeat blog took some time this morning to commemorate the first known purchase
made with bitcoin. The landmark moment in cryptocurrency history
happened four years ago today and involved the procurement of two
pepperoni pizzas from Papa John's. Moneybeat caught up with Laszlo
Hanyecz, the Florida programmer who initiated the transaction, to better
retell the moment:
On a bitcoin forum, he offered 10,000 bitcoins to anybody who would buy him a pizza. Today that’s worth about $5 million at current prices, but back then it was worth about $60. Hanyecz figured that was enough for two pies and compensation for somebody’s time.
He finally found a taker, another coder living in the U.K., who called a Papa John’s in Jacksonville, placed the order, and paid with his credit card. Hanyecz sent over the 10,000 bitcoins, and a somewhat confused deliveryman showed up at his door with two pepperoni pizzas. “Pizza delivery from London,” he said in an unsure voice. Hanyecz left the offer open, and bought several more pies.
Here at Moneybox, we have to wonder why the U.K. coder decided to
place such a world-historical pizza order at Papa John's. Perhaps he
didn't realize the importance of the moment. Or perhaps he wasn't
familiar with Papa John's—as online reviewers
are more than happy to tell you, Papa John's is known for its flaccid,
soulless pizza and appallingly bad service. But who knows? Maybe in 100
years Papa John's will be remembered not for its doughy, pizza-like
product but for its place in bitcoin history. Too bad Hanyecz wasn't in Chicago or New Haven four years ago today.

"Notice it doesn't say 100% Canadian beef?"
My motivation to write this came from a recent trip away with friends. Although most of them know of my stance towards A & W, we ended up stopping there for burgers to bring home for one of the husbands. The silence regarding my choice to eat a cookie from my purse instead of a burger made me reflect on how much the general population understands, or even cares about the 'fear marketing' that is going on around us at an increasing rate every day.h/t Al in Cranbrook

To save democracy, some of you should stop voting
Votes that are cast by unreflected habit — “I vote X. I always vote X” — or those cast from ignorance or systematic errors in thinking are bad votes. They are poisoned fruit. The act of voting, when corrupted by these factors, does more harm than good for the voter and for the system.

I'm not bothered that people say idiotic things; I'm bothered that individuals are losing their jobs or having something they own taken away from them because their opinion rubs against the grain. In my view, Sterling is a jerk, but being a jerk isn't a felony, nor is it a crime that demands his property be confiscated. As dog fanciers and purebred dogs owners, we should be very concerned about these reactions. We above all people should defend the rights of our fellow citizens to be stupid, ignorant, or hold viewpoints at odds with society because we very well could be targeted next.
Wait. We already are.
