Yesterday’s scorcher scorched wind power’s reputation and its bottom line, too.  This simple chart demonstrates why no company can make a profit supplying wind power to the electricity system without government subsidies, and why no society can count on wind power when the power is most needed.
The wind blew at its best in Ontario yesterday between midnight and 1 am (the first column in the chart), producing 214 megawatt-hours (1000 kilowatts to one megawatt) that hour. But it only earned $36.85 per megawatt that hour, or one-third to one-quarter the value of power during peak hours.
Over the next few hours, its next best hours for the day, wind continued to fetch very low prices.
Then, when power prices soared along with demand as society got to work, the wind turbines went to sleep. The peak production of 214 megawatts dropped to as little as 11 and never rose above 60. To put these numbers in perspective, when Ontario needed the wind most, wind was producing as little as one twentieth of 1% of Ontario’s needs –essentially nothing. Even in its best hour, wind only met 1.21% of Ontario’s needs, and that’s because other, more flexible forms of generation, scaled back their production (unlike hydro or fossil fuel generation, wind is not dispatchable).
Even had wind been able to continue producing at its rate of 214 megawatts, it would have met less than 1% of Ontario’s peak needs. Not that 214 megawatts is all that good, in any case. In that first hour, wind was operating at under 20% of its own capacity. It has better days, when the wind blows stronger and longer, but not enough of them to make wind economical.
Because wind systems will always have days when they will contribute essentially nothing, and because society will not want power blackout on those days, the only prudent course for the managers of the electricity grid is to value wind’s capacity at essentially nothing. That means other types of generating plants will always be needed to back up any wind that’s built to supply the power grid, making wind even more uneconomical, and more nonsensical as a power source to be relied upon.

If anything is more misguided and unnecessary than the recent G20 Summit itself, it’s the decision to hold an independent inquiry into police actions that weekend.
A thousand arrests, 263 charged, no one seriously hurt, no police brutality, a serene citizenry, vandalism but no violence.  Forget about it.
Oh, the civil liberties activists have their shorts in a knot, but they always do. Ignore them. As for “violence” and “rioting” on Toronto streets during the G20, that’s hyperbole and wishful thinking.
What was loose in Toronto that weekend was some hooliganism and mischief. No blood on the streets, no casualties, no real violence. The Black Bloc agitators smashed and grabbed, but they weren’t after blood. No Tehran here.

As for the occasional journalist being rounded up, into the temporary detention centre — that’s a hazard of the trade. Sure, they bellyache but their editors were probably pleased to have a staff member on the “inside” to report first-hand the horrors faced — like stale cheese sandwiches and insufficient drinking water.
To suggest there was police brutality is again wishful thinking by those who yearn for substance to malign the cops. Yes, some cops over-reacted, or questioned people unnecessarily. Or searched the wrong bag. Or questioned identities. But the city was on high alert for trouble.
Our police are not experienced in coping with riots or street violence.
The worst they’ve dealt with are street blockages by Tamil demonstrators. In any European capital, where demonstrations and violence are routine, the police are adept at clamping down quickly and ruthlessly. Thank goodness Canadian police are not experienced at the sort of mayhem other countries endure.
As for G20 demonstrations, of course it was wrong and unfortunate that police seemed to believe secret laws had been passed giving them the right to violate civil rights. It should be remembered that this was a delicate time, and it’s unlikely to happen again.
Another thing. This was the first time police had a chance to wear their new riot gear, complete with shields and helmets and all the Darth Vader stuff. Maybe it went to some heads. But nothing serious happened.
When one looks at the photos and TV shots of vandals in black smashing store windows – scenes that provoked Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly to speculate that Toronto (not his favorite city) was in flames — one can see crowds and multi-cameras in the background. But no police.
The question begs: Where were the cops? Why didn’t the police arrest these guys, and why is it that civic-minded bank employees had to step up on behalf of the rest of us to physically stop these criminal outsiders?
Again, Toronto was not “reeling from violence and vandalism and chaos.” Some were unnecessarily arrested, or held, but better safe than sorry.
To suggest, as some do, that Police Chief Bill Blair should resign or be fired is as absurd as holding the inquiry, which would serve only those who don’t like the police and want to embarrass the city.
You can be assured that the police security at the G20 will be reviewed and adjustments and improvements will be made for next time. But we should all hope that our police don’t become too experienced at coping with riots and violence, for if they do it will mean our society is disintegrating into something no one wants.

That's what Stewardship Ontario is saying about a levy for thousands of new products.

Those can range from whipped cream, pharmaceuticals, syringes, mercury containing devices and other toxic

Because manufacturers have to pay the province for recycling their products, you will end up absorbing that cost through a new eco fee.

It was introduced July 1st, the same day as the Harmonized Sales tax, but little effort has been made to educate the public about it.

The actual cost to you could be anywhere from a few cents to several dollars per product.

Stewardship Ontario is overseeing the eco fees and started it's main education campaign at the beginning of the month.

There's also a tool for consumers to use to assist them in just how much extra will be charged on their purchases on the makethedrop.ca website.

You can insert your postal code, and find which products you can recycle and where the closest collection site is located.

There are 92 special disposal sites across Ontario.

Products most purchased that will be affected by the eco fee:
- All aerosol containers, including paint and hairspray
- Rechargeable batteries, as well as non-lead acid motive batteries
- Corrosives and irritants, like household bleaches, drain cleaners and detergents
- Assorted toxic, flammable and reactive products
- Syringes and needles
- Pharmaceuticals for humans and pets as well as over the counter drugs and natural health products.
- Flourescent tubes and bulbs
- Fire extinguishers

Canadians are standing nearly united, as they call for members of the Black Bloc who destroyed parts of the downtown core to be charged under terrorist laws.
A new poll by Ipsos Reid for Newstalk 1010 shows three quarters of both Canadians and GTA residents believe these violent demonstrators shouldn't be charged under the regular criminal code.

The majority of Canadians and those in the GTA - 80 and 82 per cent, respectively -  believe it should be illegal to cover your face in demonstrations as members of the Black Bloc did with bandannas.
Compensation was also an issue, with violent protests causing damages to businesses in downtown Toronto. 90 percent of those who live in the area and 77 per cent of Canadians believe Ottawa should foot at least part of the bill.
All this comes as the Toronto Police Services Board approves an in-dependant civilian review of G20 procedures, something that 47 per cent of those polled support.

The Globe and Mail’s Christie Blatchford starts out by supporting due process for anyone who feels he was mistreated by the cops during the G20 crackdown, including members of the Blogger/Tweeter brigade. But she thinks some of those people have inappropriately claimed the title of Journalist despite the fact they have no editors or lawyers or Press Council overseeing them. You’re not a journalist just “because you and your friends say you are or because your ‘writings’ appear on a website,” she sneers.

The whole “what is a journalist” debate aside, the main problem here is that she doesn’t identify any of these people — or indeed any of the people who supposedly think any self-styled “alternative journalist” should “be automatically assumed to be an infallible truth-teller or always accurate.” And then she admits that journalists get stuff wrong all the time. And then she says (and we agree) that press credentials don’t and shouldn’t afford any kind of special status in the first place. And then she says the authority under which the vast majority of people, journalists or otherwise, were arrested is “vile” and “easily misused by police.” So why go after all the amateurs out there with cameras and iPhones — who are, incidentally, as the Robert Dziekanski case proved, providing an utterly invaluable service to society? We honestly don’t get it.

My favorite part, though, is the two hours or so before the parade starts — when the participants are strolling about in the staging area, assembling into their various groups. By showing up early, you can meet the one-off oddballs who seem to defy categorization.
My favorites this year were a Borat look-alike wearing (apparently, without irony) a tight green unitard, an older man dressed up as a flower (“He’s a pansy,” explained one of my colleagues matter-of-factly, as if this were some sort of official gay sub-genre (is it?)), an impossibly epicene man in a superhero costume who described himself as “SuperGay” (see photo, above), a tall transsexual who had done himself up as a 50s-era air hostess with the most extraordinary Mad Men-worthy attention to detail (see photo, below), and some fully naked middle aged men representing a group with the flagrantly redundant name “Totally Naked Toronto Men Enjoying Nudity.”
I also enjoyed the small but feisty contingent of self-proclaimed asexuals, one of whom had the parade’s best placard: “It’s not that you’re not sexy. I just don’t care.”
Anyone expecting some sort of massive gay protest against the police, stemming from last month’s G20 fracas, would have been disappointed. The officers on duty were all smiles. And there was a line-up of parade-goers getting their pictures taken with them. Some of these folks leapt into the officers’ arms, cabaret-style — without any fear of brutality. The only scintilla of anti-cop militancy came in the form of a small group bearing “F*ck the police” signs and — more memorably — a group member wearing a police outfit, gimped out on all fours. The activist holding the gimp-cop’s leash was herself wearing a Balaklava (see photo, below).

James Morton: A thug goes free, thanks to police

In 2002 a series of particularly brutal home invasions took place in Mississauga, Ont. A gang of thugs, wearing masks and armed with guns and knives, forced their way into homes in the early hours of the morning. They used plastic tie wraps to bind the half-asleep residents by their wrists and ankles.
The gang inflicted dreadful abuse upon their victims, including:

• confining an elderly woman and telling her she would be shot if something went wrong;
• using a knife to carve a dollar sign into a man’s back and trying to cut off his finger;
• grabbing an eight-year-old girl, pushing her down, telling her to say goodbye to her parents and telling the child’s parents that they would take her unless all their money was handed over; and
• sexually assaulting a woman by placing a gun in her mouth while digitally penetrating her vagina, and by placing a gun in her vagina.

It is hard to find any sympathy for those committing such horrific crimes. And it is easy to understand why investigating police and prosecutors felt righteous indignation against those they believed to be guilty.
