Longer jail terms likely as new law now in effect

REGINA — People appearing in court today could face longer sentences — and the increased possibility of being imprisoned indefinitely as dangerous offenders — because of new crime legislation now in effect.
As of today, the final two provisions of Bill C-2, the Conservative government’s Tackling Violent Crime Act, are in force and are expected to bring longer jail terms, more dangerous offender designations and increased police power in impaired driving allegations.
The bill’s other provisions — raising the age of consent to 16 from 14, increasing sentences for firearm-related crimes, creating new firearm offences and making it more difficult for people charged with gun offences to receive bail — came into effect on May 1.

oh it has worked WONDERS down in the states! The super jails are just stuffed with inmates that cant build jails fast enough, and look at the crime rate!
