Spanking the Renaissance-Man
I recall that when Michael Ignatieff got elected in Canada for the first time, and not that long ago, both CTV and CBC reporters were beside themselves with glee. In fact, so excited were they, that instead of the tingle up the leg, they appeared to be getting more of the trickle down the leg ... much like the little excited puppy. One, I can't recall exactly who, kept calling Ignatieff the "Renaissance-Man" ... a description that would indeed, please the new Liberal leader.
Well, the sixth smartest man in the world has clearly become the darling of those journalists trying their best to resurrect the good'ol days of Liberal Party of Canada dominance.
It's a shame then, when pesky facts keep getting in the way and blowing the dew off the lily:
L. Ian MacDonald writes that "The lure of politics, and the prospect of leadership, brought Pearson home after a lifetime in the foreign service, much as it brought Ignatieff home after nearly 30 years as a public intellectual, author and commentator in Britain and the United States." That is a wildly inaccurate comparison.
