Over here in Russia the world can say all it wants about our "human rights" issues, but we don't let groups protest and distrupt our day to day activities. Today in Moscow aparently between 30 and 40 Gay rights activists were stopped from demonstrating, and detained. Moscow police violently dispersed a gay pride rally Saturday that was banned by city authorities, drawing attention to Russia's record on gay rights as it prepares to host a major international pop music competition. (CTV) Moscow police detained on Saturday about 40 people, who had allegedly taken part in an unsanctioned gay parade, a police spokesman said. The head of the Gay Russia project Nikolai Alekseyev, U.S. gay rights activist Andy Thayer, and Peter Tatchell from the U.K. were among those detained in the capital's southwest a few hours ago. "They were detained not for breaking the law, but as a warning that holding events unsanctioned by the authorities is unacceptable. After a cautionary talk and establishing all their identities, the detainees will be released," he said. Moscow police issued a statement on Friday stating that they would stop any attempts by organizers to hold an unauthorized gay parade. (RIANOVOSTI) What I do find interesting is the way the story is writen - first from CTV - Moscow police violently dispersed a gay pride rally - and then from Russian news source - Moscow police detained on Saturday about 40 people - The use of one word tells so much - was it violent? I doubt it, but these people were demonstrating without a permit and the police were doing their jobs. Something the police in Toronto should take a lesson from - to do their job and make sure that peoples daily lives aren't disrupted by selfserving assholes. Oh yea and Russian police don't need tasers to assist them.
