Re:Exodus due to `ethnic cleansing,'
Letter May 16
Karin Brothers wrote an inaccurate response to the issue of dwindling Christian populations in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Her accusation of "ongoing ethnic cleansing ... from 1948 to the present" lays the blame for this unfortunate situation strictly on Israel. Use of the term ethnic cleansing criminalizes all the activities of the state of Israel to ensure the security of its citizens.
Most genocides begin with words. Words designed to vilify, to criminalize, to dehumanize. After the words, the killings follow. And to falsely accuse Israel of ethnic cleansing is the first step in this odious cycle of hate. For this reason I feel it was inappropriate of the Star, a newspaper in a city with a large, diverse and basically tolerant population, to allow itself to be a podium for such terrible accusations.
