Councillor to file complaint over threat
The complaint is on track.Councillor Cesar Palacio said yesterday he won't back off his plan to ask the city's integrity commissioner to rule on the threatening conduct of fellow city councillor and chairman of the TTC Adam Giambrone.
Giambrone apologized Friday for sending an e-mail to Palacio warning him to "stop messing in my ward."Palacio said accepting the apology is "the only decent thing to do," but that doesn't mean he should get away with threatening other members of council."The bottom line is, he is in a powerful position as TTC chair and he shouldn't be allowed to get away with these intimidation tactics," Palacio said.
The city's integrity commissioner, Lorne Sossin, will be asked to determine whether Giambrone's threatening e-mail message qualifies as "discreditable conduct" under council's code of conduct under which all councils are supposed to treat each other "without abuse, bullying or intimidation."
LIQUOR LICENCE
The dispute with Giambrone arose after Palacio's office helped in an effort to secure a liquor licence for an upcoming Portuguese community event that's happening in Giambrone's ward, but Palacio said the threats wouldn't deter him from helping them again."These people came to me because I've known them for 25 years," he said. "They are extremely familiar with me and we have formed a close bond over that time and if they ask again, I am going to help them again."Palacio's Ward 17 and Giambrone's Ward 18 share a border along Dupont St. between Dundas St. W. and Dovercourt Rd.Councillor Michael Thompson, who sits next to Giambrone at council, said the TTC chairman's e-mail was likely written out of frustration and should never have been sent, but the whole affair should end with the apology."Adam's a terrific guy," Thompson said. "And I think his apology was sincere and it should end there."
