A Name Change Is Like Putting On A New Suit But.....

........but not changing underwear and socks. You might look better but the odor still lingers.

Chris Selley's Full Pundit: The new adventures of the old New Democrats

A 15% party by any other name...
Renaming the NDP, reading Dostoevsky for insights into Canadian politics, dancing on Karlheinz Schreiber's extradition order, and other worthwhile pursuits.

The Globe and Mail's Lawrence Martin revisits one of his (and Canadian politics') sillier pet issues, namely, the idea that changing the name of the New Democratic Party of Canada to simply the Democratic Party of Canada would represent “one of the boldest and wisest moves they have made in a long time.” It's not that we disagree — picking the NDP's boldest, wisest move is hard work, there being so few bold, wise moves from which to choose. Nor do we disagree with Martin's various prescriptions for the party, such as “taking politics to the grassroots via the new technologies and communications tools” (though this sounds suspiciously like vacuous political bafflegab). We just don't understand why we should expect changing the name would help, let alone changing the name to match an American party that much of the rank and file would consider right-wing lunatics. Martin trots out Michael Byers to explain the thinking — “acronyms have proliferated to the point where people don't really pay attention to them any more,” he says — but succeeds only in making us snort derisively.

Seriously, you guys, it's not the acronym that's the problem. Rather, as Andrew Steele explains on his Globe blog, the problem is a policy portfolio that is struggling to “transition away from an industrial base to a service economy base.” That said, Steele does congratulate the Dippers on “beginning a serious process of renewal.”

Is it time for the New Democrats to Delete "New"?
Has it only been 50 years since the CCF evolved into the NDP -- I guess it has. Just about 50 years now and the Party is now looking for a new name. But it's been only 50 years. By..
