A GTIVEN! Govt. Will Not Remove Their Hand From Your Pocket

Kelly McParland: No one's a virgin in the HST bordello

The great thing about the harmonized sales tax (HST) is that everyone hates it equally and is intent on blaming someone else for its existence, even though no one has much claim to innocence.

Just to cite a couple of Full Comment's own occasional bloggers, here's Stephen Taylor pointing to an attack on the tax by Ujjal Dosanjh. And here's Jeff Jedras criticizing Taylor for criticizing Dosanjh. The thing is, they both have a case. The HST has Liberals and Conservatives alike deeply in its clutches, and the only reason the NDP is less tainted is that it can rarely manage to get itself elected anywhere.

Consider, the HST was first adopted by New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland when all three had Liberal governments, and the Liberals had a majority in Ottawa. Since then they've all had both Liberal and Progressive Conservative governments, and Nova Scotia has an NDP government, none of which shown any inclination to reverse the tax.
