Matt Gurney: Toronto Star finds Danny Williams guilty of being rich

'Rich man travels to America! That's three things they hate right there, all in one sentence.'
Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams is sick. We don't have a lot of details yet, but he's going under the knife this week for something related to his heart, so we can safely assume that it's serious. That's about all the facts we have right now. Oh, except one other thing, courtesy of our socially self-righteous pals down at Progressive HQ (otherwise known as the Toronto Star building): he's not just sick, but rich. Like, REALLY rich. I wonder which one upsets them more.  The Star is so eager to point out that Williams has oodles of money that they don't even require you to read the article. They helpfully put it right in the headline splashed across the front page of today's edition: "Danny Millions Heads South." Egads, you can smell the indignation. Rich man travels to America! That's three things they hate right there, all in one sentence.

Chris Selley's Full Pundit: Where ya to, Mr. Williams?
Posted: February 03, 2010, 11:35 AM by Chris Selley
Nobody’s business but everybody’s We’re genuinely surprised how many people are weighing in so quickly on Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams’ heart surgery in the United States and what it says about Canadian Medicare, considering how little we know about his prognosis — editorialists at the Globe and Mail, Montreal Gazette (who assume Mr. Williams is paying out of pocket, which — last we checked — we don’t know for sure), Edmonton Journal and Toronto Star, and Don Martin (who focuses on Mr. Williams’ new status as a socialized healthcare bogeyman for the American right) and Lorne Gunter in the National Post. To us, it comes down to one very simple question (and this is basically what the Globe says): What would have happened to Mr. Williams if he hadn’t been Mr. Williams, but rather, say, a humble tradesman? People get referred out of province, on Medicare’s dime, all the time. We certainly see no reason for Newfoundland’s health system to clog up a bed in Toronto if one was available in Boston (and certainly not for fear of poisoning the debate south of the border, which really isn’t any of our business). It’d sure be nice if Mr. Williams’ office confirmed the exact situation, and the fact it hasn’t suggests there is some hypocrisy afoot here. But we’re withholding judgment until we know the specifics.
