Pensions Debateable But Free Parking Is A No Brainer...

I am not sure about Ottawa but I have suggested that if Toronto city employees and politicos had to pay market rate for parking in the garages in close proximity to Toronto Silly Hall and at substations it would raise much needed revenue plus reduce traffic congestion...

The God-given right to free parking and big pensions

Apparently, free parking is another one of those fundamental rights that comes with working for the government, that don't apply to the rest of us:
The Harper government could generate millions in savings by charging public servants market rates to park at federal buildings and some military bases or it could simply stop providing parking. The move would end more than a decade of dithering among departments and agencies to enforce the government's 13-year-old parking policy, which is inconsistently applied across the country. One long-time bureaucrat said Public Works and Government Services zeroed in on parking revenues as a source of savings during its "The Way Forward" review several years ago and estimated it could save at least $10 million a year by charging going rates or getting out of providing excess parking stalls.
