Sesquipedalians? We Called Them Psedou Intellectuals

Paul Russell: Praise for our sesquipedalians, boos for our women's studies editorial

Women’s Studies programs have very vocal supporters. And we heard many of those voices last week as nearly three dozen letters rolled in, critical of a Jan. 26 editorial titled “Women’s Studies is still with us.” These correspondents spared no quarter in expressing their anger. “Allowing this article to be published was completely irresponsible, and  violated many of the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Charter,” wrote Robyn Caplan. “The entire article is an incitement of hatred toward the female sex.” “This editorial is the most ridiculous piece of newspaper writing I have ever seen,” agreed Ana Lukatela. “You all look like cretins.” “[The editorial] was, without a doubt, the most misinformed piece of ignorant drivel I have ever read,” added Chris Russell (who pointed out that he is a man). “Not everyone is a fan of women’s studies, and some people think feminism is no longer needed … but  to claim that almost any of the radical viewpoints [mentioned in the editorial] are commonly held by feminists or Women’s Studies professors is just outlandish.” Not everyone, though, was upset by the editorial’s viewpoint.
