Kramden And Norton Were Paid (Elected) To Be Funny...

Kelly McParland: White House practises diplomacy by Ralph Kramden

There's an episode of The Honeymooners that first aired in 1955 in which Kramden and Norton get into a dispute over a new TV that Norton wins in a draw. It's Norton's birthday and Ralph is too cheap to take him to the Kit Kat club, where Norton took him on his birthday, so they go to a movie instead. Naturally, when Norton wins the TV, Ralph gets jealous and claims it belongs to him because he paid for the tickets.  The quarrel escalates and they stop talking to one another, writing out notes instead and competing to see who can act ruder and more insulting than the other. Apparently President Obama's top diplomatic advisers have been whiling away the hours watching old Honeymooners episodes, and have taken to practising foreign relations based on the same code of behaviour as Ralph and Ed. When Vice President Joe Biden went to Israel last month and was embarrassed by a badly-timed announcement over new housing in East Jerusalem, he retaliated by turning up 90 minutes late for a dinner with Netanyahu and trashing his hosts in private remarks that somehow managed to find their way into local papers.
